Updated requirements for Mock2 & e-EQE 2021

Update 26 Feb 22: updated epi link
Update 10 Feb 21: Ignacio Lobato Holtmann has created a Telegram group for fast exchange of eEQE questions, tips and info. He also proposes forming study groups for the next EQEs.
Mock2 was intended to test everything with a big load, so the flows will NOT be available later. 4 Feb & 5 Feb are the last chances to test YOUR system before the exam, so login as much as possible. If logging in late, use invigilator password is: xyz

Updated 2 Feb 21 with comments on D (see end of post)
Update 1 Feb 21 after starting Mock2 PE Part 1( in red).
Thu 28 Jan 21, updated docs on official EPO e-EQE page website in preparation for Mock2 and exam. Read in detail before testing and again before the exam (updated regularly)

I have updated my earlier posts as much as possible. I have not linked to official docs as they are updated regularly - print them out and have them at the exam. A selection from the updates:

    1. Location for exam
    • cover any see-through wall or door in room through which another might be able to see your screen
    • cover any window, mirror or other shiny or glossy surface behind you
    • no other electronic devices permitted unless explicitly allowed by Examination Secretariat in advance
    • food, drink and medicines allowed
    • eyewear allowed but only for correcting or aiding vision
    • cannot leave room or move out of camera view within first 30 mins of exam
      • Mock2 PE: I also handed in and left within 25 mins without problem.
    2. Hardware
    • camera centred above or below frame of the active screen, but not more than 5 cm away from it
    • audio verification required before you can access the flow
    • test audio and video before launching Lockdown browser (in operating system)
      • Mock2 PE: needed to have camera & microphone working before starting browser. After that they stayed on, but no invigilation and no warnings if you get up etc.
    3. Software
    • Zendesk info added to communicate with invigilators. Must login for exam. Login available in Lockdown browser under External Resources. Login possible from normal browser if problems. New address given: support@epo.zendesk.com. Set up Zendesk account in online environment (another username and password)
      • Mock2 PE: I could not log on to Zendesk (I have not received a password, and no account exists yet for me). But I could still do Mock2 PE part 1 without it.
      • Mock2: although you can log-in, they were not responsive. So if you get kicked out, or are late, you cannot do Mock2
    • turn off screensavers and power saving
    • accept all cookies at WISEflow login
      • Mock2: if you have a touchpad, turn off 3 & 4 finger gestures in windows settings
    4. Invigilation
    • Before Mock2, use "Reference photo with ID/passport " flow to record your e-EQE reference photo (available from 29-01-21 14:00). Only takes few minutes, and will save you time during the EQE and Mock 2. Once completed, when accessing any subsequent flow, you will simply have to take an entry photo without the ID card/passport.
      • Apparently, if not happy, can exit flow without finishing and tick box to say you want to retake. That allows picture to be taken again.
      • If not successful (eg ran out of time), when you start Mock2, you will be prompted to do it again, so have ID ready.
    • take entry image when prompted starting exam flow, ensuring entire face is visible, and approve it.
      • Mock2 PE: I had completed ID flow correctly 1 day before. On starting browser, just had to take picture of face. Also had to check microphone working and speak my name into it.
    • if late due to exceptional circumstances, may still take exam, but need to supply evidence afterwards. You could still be disqualified afterwards.
      • Mock2: invigilators will not respond, so if you are late, you cannot start exam
    • unscheduled breaks (A,B,C,D2) only possible after 30 mins passed from official exam start time
    • inform invigilator via chat function:  “I take an unscheduled break” and “I’m back from the unscheduled break”
      • Mock2 PE and D: no active invigilation
    • may not take any material or docs from desk during unscheduled break. Cannot leave room or move out of camera view within first 30 mins of exam
      • Mock2 PE and D: no active invigilation

    5. Lockdown Browser:

    • Updated 3 Feb 21: I have collected crash & restart issues here in a separate post
    • test audio and video before launching Lockdown browser
    • Log-in to Zendesk for invigilation
      • Mock2 PE: I could not log on to Zendesk (I have not received a password, and no account exists yet for me). But I could still do Mock2 PE part 1 without it.
      • Mock2: invigilators will not respond, so if you are late or get kicked out, you cannot start exam
    • warning added: don't just click on thumbnail for side-by-side preview. Select language first. Otherwise, you will only be able to read in German. Refreshing browser means you may have to start exam again!
    • warning added: max. 10 tabs to avoid crashing browser
    • zooming is possible
    • "CTRL-SHIFT V" for pasting without formatting
    • details available about taking entry image
    • Use [widget] in Paper B to indicate deletions
    • Mock2: you will get kicked out automatically if you use "blocked" options like Alt-Tab or 3/4 finger gestures too often. You then need invigilator password to get back in. During D exam, invigilators on Zendesk chat would not provide it.
    6. External References (drop down list)
    • 1. Includes login for Zendesk
      • Mock2 PE: I could not log on to Zendesk (I have not received a password, and no account exists yet for me). But I could still do Mock2 PE part 1 without it.
    • 2. Access to Calendars
      • Mock2 PE: calendars available. Links given to calendars on EPO website, but cannot open pdf versions (blocked). Use other entry in drop list which opens extra tab in browser
    • 3. EPO legal texts - access to official website texts in extra tab in browser
      • Mock2 PE: yes, available :-). Can also click on Advanced legal texts search (in bottom right). I searched through EPO Guidelines for keywords.
      • Mock2 D: can open pages and can open shorter pdfs, like OJ EPO.
    7. Mock2 Pre-Exam (=2019 Paper)
    • I only did Part 1
    • Calendars are now available in browser via Extarnal References
    • Starting flow early just puts you in a countdown window. When it reaches zero, you can start Lockdown Browser
    • Questions still presented with 3 languages intermingled
    • No real change to browser, except for: more links under External references, and icon showing that camera and microphone are turned on
      • Don't forget to turn unplug them, or at least cover them after finishing exam to ensure complete privacy.
    • No live invigilation, so also no warnings if you move or leave early etc.
    • EPO legal texts available via External References (see above)
    • After handing in Part 1, no copy was immediately available in WISEflow
      • Update: available the next day
    • If you wish, you can request an email receipt that you handed something in
    • Invigilator password is NOT same as in Mock1
    • I tried logging in late to Part 2. I could not get in. You need invigilator password, and I cant get in Zendesk!
      • invigilator passw:   xyz
    8. Mock2 Paper D (=new paper)
    • Updated 3 Feb 21: I have collected crash & restart issues here in a separate post
    • A lot of people thrown out during exam for allegedly using Alt-Tab or 3/4 finger gestures. No way back in without invigilator password. These are blocked anyway - I am not sure why you should also be punished for accidentally pressing them.
      • If you have a touchpad, turn off the 3/4 finger gestures in windows settings
    • Start on time, otherwise there is no way in. Invigilators on chat will not give you the invigilator password. I was 10 minutes late to D2, partly due to a windows update that decided to install in the break and I was trying to turn off the 3/4 finger gestures.
      • invigilator passw:   xyz
    • If anyone who was thrown out wants to do the D1 and D2 on paper, epi has made papers and model solutions available here (no login needed)
    • D exam interface was same as for Mock1, except for: more links under External references, and icon showing that camera and microphone are turned on
    • D1 part 1 was 3 questions. D2 part 1 was also 3 questions. As they are 1 page, you can have them open in assignment preview and separate tabs. Calendars were available via External References
      • Search and copy/paste from D1 questions worked fine. If you use CTRL-SHIFT-V to paste, you only need to add the spaces at the end of lines.
      • I tried the revert to previous version. This works well - it seems like a lot of intermediate versions are made. You can even reverse this by going back to a the version you just reverted from.
      • If you want to apply header formatting to a word or phrase. it must first be separated from the paragraph after and before with returns, otherwise the header style is applied to the whole paragraph.
      • My links in Table of Contents were visible, but clicking on them does not jump to that position in my answer (still same problem as in Mock1)
    • D2 was only 4 pages, so you could also open separate tabs.
    • Positive note: they have improved D2 by sorting the information for each application - that makes it easier to find when looking back, and you don't have to flip backwards and forwards when trying to place the facts with the rest.
    • Handed-in exams do become available in WISEflow, but not immediately. It takes sometime to generate the file. In the afternoon, I could see the D1 parts 1 and 2.

    1. These communications are very late by the EPO - mock 2 is next week. They keep adding more and more admin burden on candidates - do they realise how long these things take?

      1. Yes - it is very hard to keep up, but I am hoping that everything will be stable after Mock2 until the exam.
I assume that for Mock2, they will be relaxed about the room requirements etc.
It appears as if the AI monitoring system will be activated, so you can experience what it will be like.
The invigilators via Zendesk will be testing the system themselves and so only available sporadically.

    2. ... and they also require an initial ID & face picture before accessing Mock2. This is available as a separate flow in WISEflow after login.
Max. 1 hr, so make sure everything is working properly. And once taken, you cannot reset or redo it.

    3. Hello,
I don't understand "warning added: don't select wrong language as you may have to start exam again!".
In the lockdown you can only select select the documents in FR, EN or DE, appart from that I don't see how where you can change language ?

      ReplyDelete
      Replies
      1. Ah I think I see: in the editor you can not see the assignment in another language. But you can open different languages of paper in different tabs, for example to compare wording...another trap for paper E.

        Delete
      2. In the browser, you see a thumbnail of the assignment (exam). If you click on it, it opens the assignment in the preview in the default language which is German.
To actually open a different language (En or Fr), you have to first select the language in the menu at the top of the thumbnail.
I think that if you open assignments in tab, then the languages can be changed. But not the language of the assignment previewed on the same tab as your answer.

      3. The problem with the assignment preview on the same tab as my answer actually raises the question whether it is allowed to complete the three parts of paper D in different languages. Does anyone know?
I completed D1 of mock2 in English, just because all my reference book are in English as well. But for D2 I selected my mother tongue German just to read through the paper in preview mode (too many pharmaceutical terms...) Changing the language of the assignment back to English only worked for opening the assignment in a new tab. The preview actually looked weird after changing the language – page 1 had part of the paper upside-down in English and all subsequent pages remained in German. In other word, your first decision of language determines how you can view/preview the assignment side-by-side with your answer. This is actually a major issue for D2, as we cannot simply copy&paste long texts from a different tab into the answer tab as this would require significant editing (e.g. removing many line breaks) – so the side-by-side view is essential e.g. to check dates and facts taken from the assignment to the response.

    4. It was not possible for me to complete the flow for taking the reference photo. My cameras have not been recognized within the flow. Despite working fine before opening the flow. Trying everything recommended on the Wiseflow Website did not help. I contacted the helpdesk, but i dont expect any answer before Mock2. I dont understand the 1 hour restriction of this flow. This flow could have been opend weeks ago.

      1. Mock2 is also intended to test these aspects. Even if you had problems, try starting the exam as scheduled next week - either it will not be essential to do Mock2, you can contact the invigilators or they give you another chance to take it (I hope)

I just sent a list of issues that I have been asked about to helpdesk:
        - although camera was tested beforehand, camera does not always work with picture software
        - even if webcam has focus capability, software does not seem to use it
        - it was stated that there are no special specifications for webcam, but some cameras cannot resolve text on ID
        - if 1 hr expires, no way to go back
        - if you take a picture without ID, it is accepted, and no way to redo

And trying to fix this can eat up hours of time.

      2. I just did it - it is a little confusing as the onscreen instruction does not mention holding the ID. It just says a picture for facial recognition.
But there is only 1 picture to take - follow the instructions in the email and the tips4candidates, and not what you see onscreen. Hold your ID to one side, with your face on the other.
After approving it, you cannot retake it. There is a survey at the end where you can indicate that something was missing, but it does not allow any retaking.

        Delete
      3. Hello,

It is possible to retake the picture if you have not handed in "the flow" yet.

Just quick the flow after the survey and do not forget to tick the box that says that you wish to retake the flow. Then, in the wiseflow website, you click again on the id flow and you should be able to retake the picture.

At least it worked for a colleague of mine.

    6. Hello Pete, I messed up and only took a picture without holding my ID next to my face. In the survey at the end, I indicated that I took a picture without my ID. Any idea how to fix this situation?

      Thanks in advance

      1. No - it does not seem possible. You are not the only one, and I almost did it myself because I was reading the on-screen instruction which does not mention ID.
I don't think it will be critical for Mock2, but just in case, send an email to helpdesk@eqe.org to ask them to reset it.

    7. I am utterly confused about the ID picture requirement. I think I've missed up by not taking the right photo, Can we take this again? there is no indication that you can change your picture.

A Video tutorial would be helpful rather than pages and pages of instructions.

      2. I have managed to reach the helpdesk. They said we will be able to participate in the Mock2 even when we failed to take the Ref photo (in my case the 1 hour timeframe passed before I managed to take the photo). They said that we should have our ID ready as a new ref photo will be taken at the start of the mock exam.

      1. No Idea. I have used online systems before where they either automatically check (or more frequently use a person to check) before such pictures are accepted. Normally you get some kind of feedback.
I cant imagine that they will block you from Mock2 for this.

    11. Also a bit concerned about what they will do/where they are going to store our personal data.

      1. Very good question - there is a data protection statement on the e-EQE website (no direct link to docs as all these documents are updated regularly).
It is mainly the responsibility of the EPO, but to process the data they have to send some of it to others.

        Delete
      2. 4. Who has access to your personal data and to whom is it disclosed?
The personal data is disclosed, on a need to know basis, to the following recipients:
        • the EPO’s staff members of the Examination Secretariat;
        • members of the Examination Committees and the Examination Board;
        • EPO authorised users (`master` users)
        • Administrators of the WISEflow platform at UNIWise
Zendesk as the subprocessor of UNIWise will have access to the data of the EPO `master` users for the
management of ticketing of incidents (if the case may be), and to the following data of the candidates and the members of the Examination Committees for the bidirectional communication channel (chats) during the examination:
        • First Name
        • Surname
        • Email address
        • Preferred language
        • IP address
        • Content of the communication (chat) between the candidate and the Examination Committee member,
        who acts as invigilator.
AWS Amazon (Ireland) are providing the hosting service for the processor UNIWise.
Among the above listed personal data, only facial images, audio and biometric data produced from webcam
and audio captures are processed by AWS Amazon for the purpose of the AI-based invigilation, while all others are merely hosted and stored in their system in an encrypted form.

      3. 5. How do we protect and safeguard your information?
We take appropriate technical and organisational measures to safeguard and protect your personal data from accidental or unlawful destruction, loss, alteration and unauthorised disclosure or access.
The EPO has pre-configured the access rights in order to make sure that the personal data is protected and
that all possible measures have been taken to safeguard the confidentiality, integrity and availability of the information within the tool.
UNIWise has pre-configured restricted access and committed to comply themselves and ensure the
compliance of their sub-processors with the data protection rules and requirements in a specific data
        processing agreement

    13. Great. Could things get worse? So, IT still has zero solution for me. They logged me in as admin, called it a temporary fix. but I can never log off, because I myself cannot log back in as admin. Guess what, Wiseflow just crashed my computer. I'll have to do a hardcore re-boot.....so, no admin access and no more Wiseflow. I backed it up on an old PC which is WAY more stable, but the old computer has no webcam. Sure, I ordered one, but guess what, Paper D is Tuesday. Oh yeah, and we are ALL on lockdown, so I can't go buy one. Oh, also, I'm in quarantine, too, so even if stores were open, not allowed to go. My only choice is to bully IT ALL DAY LONG tomorrow AGAIN. And what if we get to Tuesday and Wiseflow crashes the computer? I'm beyond frustrated.

    15. I use the lockdown browser with an external twenty-whatever-inches display and an external camera. The browser recognised my external camera ok, but when I take a photo, the resulting image is stretched sideways. I had to re-login using my laptop and use the built-in camera to take the image. Took about 40 min (out of that bl**dy 1 hour slot!) to figure out how to temporarily resolve the issue. I suspect the problem is that my laptop and my external monitor have different aspect ratios and the lockdown browser struggles to recognise which aspect ratio to choose even if only the external display is used.

*sarcastically* Thank you EPO/EPA for adding even more stress on the candidates!

    16. Post updated after doing Mock2 PE Part 1:
      - New: EQE2021 calendars can already be printed for PE and Paper D. Print before exam. On EQE notices page.

PE 2019 paper used for Mock2:
      - needed to have camera & microphone working before starting browser. After that they stayed on, but no invigilation and no warnings if you get up etc.
      - I could not log on to Zendesk (I have not received a password, and no account exists yet for me). But I could still do Mock2 PE part 1 without it

      - EPO legal texts were available :-). Can also click on Advanced legal texts search (in bottom right). I searched through EPO Guidelines for keywords. At least hits are visible (which may already be enough). I forgot to try clicking on hits, but I assume this works as they are html.

    17. Dear Pete,

thanks once again also from here for your assistance.

I have a quick question regarding the entrz image.

It says in the user guide that For Mock 2 and any other access to FLOWlock before the EQE, you should take the first entry image with the same hardware settings as you will use for the EQE.

"Should" means in this case "must"?

It turns out that I have the opportunity to write using the huge screen in our office for oral proceedings etc. During the Mock 2 papers I would like to test this option as well to see if it s better to have such a big screen during the whole time.

However, as you may undestand, setups will be very different. Huge screen attached to the wall with the camera zoomed for taking the entry picture VS normal external screen with a webcam attached to it.

      What do you think?

      Thank you. Omiros

      1. For Mock2 Pre-Exam, I took an entry picture with a completely different camera and it was accepted. We will see for the other papers whether they are stricter.
Try it - if they are using proper facial recognition, then the camera should not make any difference if it is zoomable.

The Main Exams must be different to Mock1 - epi has charged people for access to videos and Q&A's. That would not make sense unless they have made something new or considerably adapted old exams.

    20. I have to confess that I am finding the EPO software choice extremely difficult to understand. Why have they chosen such complexity?

Today was a bit chaotic - trying to get online, wiseflow crashing, taking picture for ID checks the other day, and I also had printing issues today (which I don't know if its because of wiseflow or my printer). If this happens on the day, it would be extremely harsh for us not to be able to log back into the system again.
The EPO have just sent another email update. It appears from the outside that this system has created so much confusion for candidates. Its not good enough in my opinion.

      1. I agree - there should be a high degree of flexibility on exam day to balance the risk of some small IT issue tripping up candidates.
Every candidate has a different hardware/software configuration, and it is not easy to figure out whether the problems are structural or individual. Each time they add another piece, like logging in to Zendesk, it just makes it worse. And relying on instructions to compensate for a poorly designed user interface does not work.

It reminds me of the metro ticket machines in Munich - all the options are in there, but you have to follow a certain path through the menus. Designed by engineers to be "logical". If you go the wrong way, you have to go back. If you wait too long or press the wrong button, you can start again. They sometimes accepts EUR 50 notes, but not if you need too much change. Only the ones in the airport accept credit cards, not on the platforms. Some only accept coins. And if you try to buy more than one ticket, some are date-stamped, and some without. Innenraum & Aussenraum rings etc. Munich natives also struggle and curse those machines.
After going there for years, I could finally get tickets for several days in one go. One time, I was checked on the train, but on that day I had dropped my first ticket somewhere and lost it. So I was fined EUR 55. But it was possible to appeal after paying, with proof of purchase (credit card bill).

I was hoping the e-EQE would be simpler than this. Everything really needs to be stable for the next 4 weeks - no new features unless it is solving the bugs already present.

Why so much complication? is not face recognition enough? why an extra password to go back into the system? 3. I agree - if it is blocked, then what is the problem? Just count the number of times somebody uses it.

We already have enough changes for these exams, do we really need all these extra-changes in methodology and specific questions like "what to do if Mr O refuses/agrees to co-operate" and "what speaks in favour of filing direct EP vs PCT?" Why not proceed with typical structure of the questions?

      5. I certainly agree that the change in the format of the questions seemed to be a tad unfair, as do some of my colleagues. There was a lot of speculative parts in relation to all of the applications which I don't recall having seen in such numbers before which lead to a swelling of potential interactions to talk about (i.e. if this - then do this, if not - do this). I'm chalking this up to it being an EPI mock paper as opposed to a heavily moderated real paper, but it is a bit worrisome as it could lead to a last minute change in how people have to prepare (on top of all of the other hurdles)

      6. I will do the DII later and have a look in more detail.
I have complained for years that it is not really fair to ask vague questions, and not award marks when candidates dont answer certain implicit questions that are almost always the same.
But in general, on DII, you are advising a client, so you need an eye on the bigger picture, and to address any specific issues that come up.
The nice thing about explicit questions is that you know what to discuss and they must award marks for the discussion. Even if you think something else might be more important, always answer the explicit part.

    32. FYI I was able to talk to an invigilator via the ZenDesk chat: the pdf files of the answers are indeed created some time after the handing in (up to few hours apparently). I went to check and now my answers for D1 (pt 1 and 2) are both available. however this is worrisome for paper C where the answer to pt 1 is important to keep writing in pt 2. if it is not made available in the short break between pt 1 and 2 it will be a problem. I will wait to see what happens on thursday and then will email helpdesk about it.

apart from this, everything worked well for me. I also asked the invigilator if he could see/hear me and he said yes.

I am sorry for those who had troubles, I just wanted to give a positive perspective and report that things can indeed also work well, although I still do not like the system in itself and find it unnecessarily complicated.

    33. The actual system of WISEflow I found worked okay in terms of editing. The copy and paste formatting hoo-ha if you want to bring anything in from the question paper is terrible. I found the timing for Part II to be okay, but for Part I, i found time to be very, very tight, even for questions I was comfortable with.

Zendesk seems to be absolutely terrible: I queued up to speak to the invigilator twice, and neither time was I able to talk to one. In addition, WISEflow kept disconnecting for 30 seconds to a minute, despite my internet connection being very stable (fibre, 60MB/s), and when it did, I would get kicked to the back of the queue.

We need more clarity from the EQE about what is allowable here. Would I be disqualified if disconnected from WISEflow because of a problem with WISEflow?

If I can't get in to the flow, how exactly am I to contact an invigilator?

I'll be raising these questions for the talk on the 11th.

Did anyone else find lots of random disconnects for around a minute throughout the exam?

I was not expecting a full invigilation, but they could have at least handed out the invigilator password - a lot of people got kicked out for alleged attempts at cheating, like accidentally pressing Alt-Tab or accidentally using 3 fingers on a touchpad.

      3. I am sure they are testing traffic and capacity this week - that shouldn't be a real problem during the exam.
More likely are local issues that are more difficult to predict.

Yes - they are working night and day, but it is important to report back issues and problems to the EPO:
        1) if they hear nothing, they will assume it went well or you had planned to stop early
        2) they are using third-party software, so it helps them pressure for changes (probably after the exam) if they have 1000 emails
        3) if something happens during the exam and there is an issue, you are in a stronger position if you had already report it the first time you noticed it

However, the most crucial issue is the total lock down of the PC. I mean yhan, indeed, the button "Close browser" in the warning window didn't react to the mouse at all and the whole PC must be forcedly rebooted. And that (recovering) takes time a lot!

    41. The wiseflow system for mock 2 paper D is terrible. It kept crashing.

I also heard from a colleague that if you move out of shot, e.g. bending down to pick up a pen then you are locked out. From reading here, there are plenty of issues with wiseflow.

It really does not fill me with any confidence. I'm even more anxious and worried.

I also find the mock 2 paper quite tight for timing and DII is far to open ended. Its a strange strange paper but the wiseflow system is the most concerning.

Zendesk does not help. please provide a phone number - no one wants to be in a queue when they have serious problems.

    42. Yes, me too - I also find paper D mock 2 very time pressured. They certainly need to adjust the questions to be more fair on the timings.

Even writing something like "Art 2(1)(12) RFees) takes a bit longer to write on a computer than handwritten.

They need to consider this and adjust the paper D times.

    48. Although we (candidates) appreciate all your help Pete, it is not down to you to help candidates on log in issues. This should be the responsibility of the EPO and today has shown that Zendesk is NOT up to the task.

What is even more worrying is that many candidates were not able to take Mock 2 today for various reasons and the issues here show that the wiseflow/zendesk approach has not worked well. Waiting for an hour to get an answer is NOT good. We have wasted so much valuable time.

It is clear that the system is not quite ready but I really really really hope and encourage the EPO board to provide a much more simpler system. This is far to complicated and requires far too much admin effort from everyone. We are no longer revising for the EQEs but trying to solve software/hardware issues.

      1. I agree. I have also thought this issue relating to published material concerning WF, LDB & Zendesk. Many many pages of stuff to be read and understand relating to those when one should focus only to the EQE and law issues.

        Delete
      2. I agree with most of the points, but we are not dealing with a normal roll-out here. There is no time to switch - the only other alternative is to not hold the EQE again. Or for you to withdraw, and see what it looks like in 2022. But I dont believe they will ever go back to the old system.

They are using Mock2 to test the Zendesk and invigilation, so that will improve.

Unfortunately, the Lockdown browser is not that great for EQE exams, and they said at the webinar that probably none of the bugs will be fixed. The real exams have been adapted to cope with using the browser.
It may take too long to get help on the day of the exam. So, if you want to have the best chance of passing this year, and not be disadvantaged by the system, you need to have tested your setup and understand enough to test things and to fix some basic issues. You also need to practice typing fast, and copy/pasting, using keyboard shortcuts.
Those things have become just as important as knowledge this year.
        Also realise:
        - there are a lot of candidates who are very happy with the current system (they are slower handwriting), so they will do better this year than expected and be able to deal with the issues
        - you also need these skills for video conferencing etc with the EPO, so it is not a waste

For 2022, there is more time to make the browser more robust, but you can still have the same IT issues.

      3. I forgot one thing. Also don't be passive - if you have problems or difficulties, report them to helpdesk@eqe.org. Also relating to room requirements:
        - they get an idea of the scale of problems, and so they can prioritise any fixes
        - they find about new issues
        - you have already recorded your problem ("all due care"-like), so if it happens during the exam and there is a discussion later, you have some documented evidence

      4. I had some issues with my webcam solution. I am using a mirrorless compact camera with an hdmi out (that I used for streaming and the like once upon a time...another story) in combination with an elgato capture card.

The elgato capture cards are not compatible with the lockdown browser. That is to say that the capture card is not an option in the webcam dropdown menu when opening a flow. I have therefore used a more 'software' solution using the sony webcam software (which did show up as an option in the lockdown browser).

Anyone with any experience of this software will know it is a tad tempremental and requires a USB reset program running often (weekly, not daily, but often enough for Mr. Sod and his laws!)

I have just taken your advice Pete to email the EQE helpdesk and reporting my concern if the lockdown browser does any refreshing or polling in the background we aren't aware of, the feed could reset to the sony logo.

I haven't had any issues of the like during the mocks though.

      1. Yre right. However, please, be remembered that this Mocks2 was epi's Mock. They have very own "attorney-like" style in these Exams. It is also certainly very difficult to marks and there are thousands of candidates and the marking can't take too much time, so this is not likely the style of real exam.

        Delete
      2. As stated by someone above (excellent job on finding that info):

D2 Mock was an adapted D2 from 1994.

Interesting to note, that candidates of the past (now 27 years ago, some of them probably already think about retirement) were expected to tackle this. I forgot how the exams differed in format from todays. But hats off to the candidates of 1994. I think there was no compensable fail back then.

I for one was simply taken aback by the different style. Which goes to show that the expectation of how the questions are drafted plays also an important role on how you perform, due to the extreme time constraints.

So in effect what the EQE D2 really tests is how much information in what form can you sort out in a given amount of time, and now with the handicap of a computersystem fail or AI invigilator messup.

Is the legal assessment and application of the law really the main thing tested by D2?

This form of test really IMHO is completely detached from reality.

Show me a client that would like you to come up with a solution for a completely messed up situation within 3 hours. Would you as an attorney dive head-deep into a liabilty like this?

So the main part of the test really is the structuring of information mixed all up in the letter. Would that make you a good patent attorney?

The legal topics are really mostly the same old sauce, e.g. here in Mock and in D2 1994 they tested: priority, entitlement, abusive publication, how to revive an application.

I think these topics cand their full understanding could be better tested in a different scenario.

I repeat myself: IMHO D2 tests how good you can concentrate under extreme time pressure to get a fast overview over a legally complicated situation with expected solutions that come up again and again.

I agree with you! Yesterday I had a strong feeling that they asked some FD1 paper drafters to come up with the European version of FD1 part 2 :-)

    52. I'm a mechanical engineer, and just left Mock2 paper A 2 hours early, as it was far too chemical. I'm going to sit another (E/M paper A now, as that one was a waste of time)

      1. The chemical papers are closer in style and answer to the current combined technologies papers.
Unfortunately, the older papers expect you to have some chemistry knowledge - in the current papers, they will teach you everything you need to know.
It is a good paper to do - you need to practice extracting teaching from comparative examples. Just do it offline, where you can check basic chemistry facts, like whether two names actually mean the same thing, or basic reactions like acid-base, thermoset/thermoplast polymers etc.
See my post here. The Mock2 Paper A is based on A 2010, which was on my list :-)

      2. ok thanks Pete. This is my first year sitting the EQEs, so I would rather do more recent papers (which I haven't sat yet, than an EPI version of an old paper). I'll use your old post for ideas if I run out of new past papers though!
I just thought that in this paper, it wasn't very clear what the claim categories should be, and how many independent claims to do etc.

      3. Yes - work backwards, doing the papers of the last 4 years. For the papers you struggle with, do 2 more.
And only do really old papers when you have nothing left.

    53. Suggested way to reset after Respondus Lockdown Browser freezes in Windows 10
I just tried many different ways of crashing the browser with the keyboard. This is not a complete list, I am sure
Crashes: ALT-TAB, Winkey-D, Winkey-M, 3/4 finger gestures touchpad, F6, when trying to change any taskbar settings (any shortcut allowing other applications to be opened, going to another desktop, going to another application except Lockdown browser)
      Does not crash: Winkey-L, Winkey-space, Winkey +, Winkey -,
My invigilation is not working, so I could not test camera/microphone "problems"

      1) If an "illegal action" like Alt-Tab is detected, you get a warning.
      - at this point, you can still work, but you may not know what the issue is.
      - go to your main tab, report the problem in the chat and ask for the invigilator password in case you need it. Something in your system is generating false conflicts.

      2) If it happens again, a pop up appears with "Session has been ended administratively"
The browser freezes. What to do depends on whether you have the invigilator password.
      2a) you have invigilator password
Click on "i in a circle" logo which appears on each tab. This is where you set the zoom. There is also a button "Proctor Exit". Click on this and you can enter the password to close the browser. You are back in Windows.
2b) If that does not work, or you don't have the password, go to your Windows lock screen - either CTRL-ALT-DELETE and select Lock or Winkey-L. The mouse does not work, so use space. At the bottom right is the on/off logo - one of the options is to reboot. Ignore the warning about losing data.
After reboot you are back in Windows.

      3) Once in windows, you need the invigilator password. Open a normal browser (Chrome etc) window, go to epo.zendesk.com and login. Ask for the invigilator password

      4) Once in WISEflow, start the flow, retake entry picture, enter participation and invigilator password.
Your answer should still be there.

Note: when I tried it, the lockdown browser allows you to go to the lock screen using CTR-ALT-DELETE / Lock or Win-L without seeing that as "illegal". This is useful in the current windows, as you have the possibility to change your connected internet network and keyboard layout. I do not know if this will work on all systems.

    54. Both yesterday (Paper D) and today (Paper A) I got random disconnects for about a minute. My internet connection is fairly stable, so I think it was Wiseflow. In all cases it reconnected shortly afterwards and there was no problem. It's good to be aware of it, though, in case you are within the last minute or so of the exam and need to hand the answer in - I imagine one would not be able to do it on time if Wiseflow is disconnected at that precise moment.

    55. I have done Paper D yesterday and I would like to confirm tht it is allowed to copy and paste from the available legal text from the EPO website of the external resources into your answer sheets and, also, to use the search tool across the legal text from the available EPO website. Thanks

    56. Copy and paste for Paper A today was horrendous. It kept copying other paragraphs that I didn't want to include. It was wasting so much of my time and I got really frustrated with it.

Copy and paste from pdf should really be standard.

    57. Zendesk keeps on logging me out of the chat automatically every 20 or so minutes. Wise flow and the rest works fine (well... as designed at least). I can reconnect to the chat easily at a push of a button. But, will I get disqualified if Zendesk logs me out? Would seem unfair if they still have access to video and audio of me writing the exam.

      1. same happened to me yesterday. Today was fine, though. I share the same doubt as you

      2. do we actually need to log in to zendesk? Or is it just if you want to chat to the invigilators?

        Delete
      3. I didn't receive any notifications of any sort re Zendesk - I am not sure if there was even anything to do with Zendesk under the External Resources tab thus I am curious if I am missing something - like Alexander, is there a separate login somewhere? So much complexities to be handling amongst the exam stress, getting ridiculous at this stage to be honest.

    58. I had the Problem that during switching the different tabs is a time gap from 5seconds.

As a second point has anyone the same problem that the side by side "window" of the task is our of focus?

      1. Same here:

switching between tabs sometimes does not work and you get stuck on one of the tabs. Then you need to randomly click within the tab and by chance you can get back to the other tab. Very annoying.

        Also the copy-past formatting issue:

if you copy from the paper into your reply tab, the formatting is really off, then you delete the original format and you will get a text where words are not seperated. Makes for quite a mess and really takes away time.

        Sigh....

      2. yes, switching tab can be slow sometimes, even if I only have one tab with the paper open (one more for zendesk + one for answer). No issue on my side with side-by-side window

    59. I was 1 minute late to the exam and got locked out. I had to restart wiseflow and waste valuable time. It's ridiculous

      ReplyDelete
    60. Im sorry to say but this wiseflow system is really not working for me and I know for most of my colleagues too.

It doesn't fill me with any confidence going into the main exam.

    61. I have a law-related question regarding the Model Solution for Paper A. There are numerous product claims listed under the heading 'independent claims' in the Model Solution. The broadest claim is the glass fibre claim, which is claim 1, and then there are also claims for derived products including a fibre-bundle/net/gauze, a powder and a paste, each consisting of or comprising the glass fibre of claim 1. I would have classed the derived product claims incorporating the features of claim 1 as dependent claims under the definition provided by Rule 43(4) EPC. I understand that claims containing a reference to features from a claim of another category are independent claims (GL, F-IV, 3.8), but in Mock 2 Paper A, the fibre-bundle/net/gauze, powder and paste claims are all product claims, and so is the claim they are referring to which is the glass fibre claim of claim 1. So, are the derived product claims really independent claims as stated in the Model Solution? If so, then why?

    62. Mock2 was intended to test everything with a big load, so the flows will NOT be available later. 4 Feb & 5 Feb are the last chances to test YOUR system before the exam, so login as much as possible. If logging in late, use invigilator password is: xyz

      1. They were only available a few minutes before the start time.

      2. I locked in 1 hour before. So I have to wait until the documents are in Wiseflow and start afterwards?
I had a window with a countdown. There was the possibilty to close agin. Should I have done this?

        Delete
      3. They are testing this - for the actual exam, the documents will be available well in advance. I thought 20 minutes earlier was mentioned somewhere, but I cannot find it.
So better to first print and then start the Browser. If you close, you have to restart your regular browser, login to WISEflow, print, restart the Lockdown browser and go through the picture taking again.
